A Quest for DC Statehood

Even their license plate has Taxation without representation. It's just another example of protest on the lack of statehood for DC. According to statehood.dc.gov, it's been going on for 200 years. So if it's not a state, then what is it? It's a federal District, "...a type of administrative division of a federation, usually under the direct control of a federal government and organized sometimes with a single municipal body."

The argument for is that the people in DC have the same responsibilities as all the other citizens of the US, like serving in the Military and helping the economy, but without all the perks of citizenship. For example, DC was denied 775 million dollars from the CARES act for COVID. 86% of all residents supported the movement in 2016. Although small in size, it's more populous than Vermont or Wyoming. Also, DC pays more income tax than 22 other states, but the people of DC "have no say over how those tax dollars are spent."

There are also alternatives to this, like retrocession, where DC would be given back to Maryland. However, this process is very complicated. But the idea for statehood is generally supported by Democrats and opposed by Republicans. This is probably because DC is generally left-leaning.
