United States President Joe Biden delivered a remark on Thursday to the American people.
In the United States, more than 200 mass shootings have happened and a tremendous number of people have been killed since 2022 January. Recently, 10 people were killed in Buffalo in New York, 21 people were killed at Uvalde's elementary school in Texas, and 5 people were killed in a Tulsa hospital, which is in Oklahoma.
US President Biden said, "We can't fail the American people again. It's time for each of us to do our part. It's time to act. For the children we've lost, the children we can save, for the nation we love".
The President called on Congress to take further steps to enhance background checks for gun purchases and expand red flag laws. But first, the President needs to have approval from 60 out of 100 United States senators, which must include all Democratic senators and at least 9 Republican senators.
What are 'background checks' and 'red flag laws'? 📜
"Background Checks" are the system in the United States to make sure a gun holder is responsible. In Maryland, it requires federally licensed firearms dealers to initiate a 'background check' on the purchaser prior to the sale of a firearm.
"Red Flag Laws" laws that allow a person to go into court and secure an order from a court requiring the police to seize guns from someone who's demonstrated that they're a threat to themselves or others.
Why are the Republicans against Biden's plan? 🏛️
The reasons why President Biden can not take aggressive action is the conflict and difference of opinions from the other political party, which are the Republicans. The Republicans are against Biden's policy because of the "former president Donald Trump's power" and "lobby group/organizations", which support and fund Republican representatives. In short, President Joe Biden has to receive approval from either lobby group (company or organization) or powerful politicians - in this case, it's former president Donald Trump.
