The Capitals beat the Avalanche, 3-2.

The Capitals went into Denver ready to play and came out with a much-needed victory, 3-2. The Capitals played one of their best games all season and ended the Avalanche's nine-game winning streak. And not only did the Caps clinch a playoff spot, but they are also currently only one point away from catching the Penguins (standing image at bottom).

1st Period: 1-1

The scoring started with a breakaway by Garnet Hathaway four minutes into the game. Then, will a little less than three minutes remaining, Valeri Nichushkin put a wrister behind Samsonov to make it 1-1.

2nd Period: 2-1

The only goal for this period came from a tap-in by none other than Alex Ovechkin on the powerplay, at 13:27 into the period. That was his 48th of the season, tying him with Teemu Selanne (2006-2007) for most goals by a player 36 years or older in a single season.

3rd Period: 3-2 (Final)

The Avalanche tied up the score with Artturi Lekhonen putting a loose puck in under Samsonov's pad, making it 2-2. The game-winning goal came from Marcus Johansson at 10:46 into the period thanks to a steal by Conor Sheary. Final score: 3-2 Capitals!
